Hybrids

One of the most unsettling—and therefore most interesting—interpretations of portraiture is that of relational portraiture. When confronting characters who share a bond—be it familial, emotional, social, or, as in this case, cultural and social at the same time—an inherent ambiguity arises, teetering between the honesty of representation and an uncertain extra ingredient.

The investigative process of this project stems from the cultural emergency situation Málaga is currently immersed in—a panorama in which I feel involved and which serves as an incentive to carry out, in this case, a fieldwork-based documentary as the foundation for an artistic project. One of the main objectives is to create a kaleidoscopic collective portrait anchored in the present, a who’s who, of a situation that could be analyzed in the future as a turning point.

Al observar el resultado de este proceso en su conjunto, quisiera encontrar una suerte de tabla periódica de los elementos, una relación de rostros familiares pero enigmáticos. Observing the result of this process as a whole, I would like to find a kind of periodic table of elements—a collection of familiar yet enigmatic faces. I aim to generate curiosity in the observer, who is faced with a truthful representation of a possible being but finds subtle clues suggesting something more. Each piece in the series, a hybridization of two or more people, would stand as a classical portrait; it would function as the possible real portrait of a flesh-and-blood person. At the same time, however, and depending on the viewer's proximity to the subjects, this hypothetical observer would find a thread guiding them to recognizable elements of different personalities.
